The Internet is undergoing massive changes. We can now access the web from almost anywhere, using an unprecedented number of different types of devices and browsers. Today mobile phones in the form of smartphones are more powerful than PC's were only a decade ago; tablet computers are taking over the usage of the Internet from Laptops and Desktop computers.

Interestingly, companies start to realise that their employees are using smaller and faster devices privately than they find in their offices, resulting in new "Bring your own devices" (aka BYOD) policies. All this represents a big change to company IT policies, that in many cases don't allow access to private email accounts or social media sites.

These challenges led to the development of the concept of the Responsive Web Design, a term, coined by Ethan Morcotte. It means that instead of developing websites for each new device, web developers make web sites flexible to adapt to any device their users are accessing the resp. sites from. Flexible grids and media queries are tools available today, to make this happen.

While the dark clouds of doom gather over the desktop accounting world, Xero has positioned itself as the solution of choice for the savvy accountant looking to provide real time assistance to the small business owner. Certainly, this is proving to be a perfect storm for Xero as MYOB reels on the ropes and the great names of the accounting world like Rob Nixon blog & tweet the benefits of cloud accounting.

Over four weeks, the Xero road show has rolled around the country like a Juggernaut with a cast of stars such as ‘Shiny Shoes’, Wayne Schmidt and ‘Cool Dude’, Chris Ridd, wooing the crowds with a mix of charismatic performances, fine food and insights into how a single online ledger shared by the client and their accountant makes perfect sense.

From city to city, accountants and bookkeepers showed up in their droves, not as cold prospects but as ‘born again’ cloud converts ready to spread the new doctrine amongst their compatriots and clients.

Xero is now at the tipping point where it could potentially own the small business online accounting space and they have time on their side with a growing stable of partners (including RewardSuper) offering complimentary services via the Xero API. Certainly the ecosystem is the name of the game and the legacy players in the Australian small business and intermediary accounting space will have a mighty task catching Xero now.

Google is a huge online data repository. Everything Google users do (search and browsing) is being recorded, kept for eternity and used for advertisement and research.

Recently Google upgraded their privacy policy and among other things now allow users to delete their complete web history. In order to utilise this facility, just sign in to your Google account and select "Clear your Google Web History".

TIP: If you don't want your browsing monitored and recorded, deploy the Google Chrome browser and operate it in incognito mode. A similar feature exists with the Diigo browser on the iPad.

Recently we came across a blog by Riitta Raesmaa, an exceptional Finish startup entrepreneur. One of her excellent blog entries was all about good listening and its important role for business life. We all know from our daily experiences, how important it is not to talk all the time, but to listen to what others have to say. We may learn a thing or two :-)

Riita introduced Julian Treasure to us. Julian's surname perfectly describes what he represents for the world of sound  -  Julian is an expert for sound and listening. Watch and listen to what he has to say about ways to better listening.

Kathryn Schulz is a prolific author, journalist and a very entertaining public speaker. Her current favorite themes are Wrongness and Regret. As a "Wrongologist" Kathy reminds us that we should not try to be faultless all the time, but embrace being wrong as a way to gain insight into better ways how to lead our working and private lives. She's even written a book about "Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error"

Just right at the beginning of the silly season, watch this insightful TED video with Kathryn Schulz, in which a "Chinese character" plays a funny role.

Many thanks Kathryn for allowing us to share your great TED speech with the readers of our Blog!

We have been InterSystems partners for a number of years and tremendously enjoy the reliability, powerful features and excellent support of its software products for developers, most notably the Caché object data base and developing environment, as well as Ensemble, its powerful integration platform.

With this post we make the readers of our blog aware of the unique capabilities Ensemble holds for integrating disparate systems. While Ensemble is known for being heavily deployed in the medical space, we use it successfully for building composite applications in the Cloud for other industries, such as Financial Services and Accounting.

The Australian Financial Review published a very interesting article in their print edition today. Among other industry pundits, this leading Australian business daily interviewed Wolf Schumacher, the Director of RewardSuper.

Read what Wolf and other experts had to say about Cloud Computing as used by the Australian Financial Planning profession:

  • Cloud computing leads to a whole pile of servers in offices becoming redundant.
  • The industry wants an online service that will allow planners to outsource administration tasks such as data entry,
  • Security issues are of concern to some firms.
  • Planners want better integration of professional software with investment platforms.

Sun, 06 Nov 2011 22:33:00 -0800 SMSF administration in the Cloud - A RSDataWeb case study http://blog.rewardsuper.com.au/smsf-administration-in-the-cloud-a-rsdataweb http://blog.rewardsuper.com.au/smsf-administration-in-the-cloud-a-rsdataweb

Our recent article about "Accountants moving into the Cloud to administer SMSFs", yielded an excellent response by some large and mid-sized Accounting firms with SMSF clients.

Most of these firms are well aware of the benefits that Cloud computing can offer and are keen to start moving into the direction. The automation of investment and cash transactions is an excellent area to start, as it allows to integrate with a large number of external data providers.

RSDataWeb is a web-based data automation & integration platform, that integrates a wide range of electronic financial data feeds into streams of real-time and historic data helping to eliminate the tedious tasks of client data preparation in most accounting offices. RSDataWeb is not an afterthought by otherwise non-web oriented software vendors, but a powerful scalable web solution that saves Accounting and Advice firms real staff time and money.

As a case in point, we’ve put together a case study of an  Australian Accounting firm, which automated its data preparation with the help of RSDataWeb.

Enjoy the introductory video!

Wed, 02 Nov 2011 23:31:00 -0700 Chi-X throws down the gauntlet to the ASX http://blog.rewardsuper.com.au/chi-x-throws-down-the-gauntlet-to-the-asx http://blog.rewardsuper.com.au/chi-x-throws-down-the-gauntlet-to-the-asx

Today was the first day of share trading at Chi-X Australia, the new competitor to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), competing from inside Australia.

In this video, the interviewer asks Peter Fowler, Chief Executive of Chi-X Australia, which is owned by the Japanese Nomura Corp., some very interesting questions, eg about data feed availabilities and the relevance of the new exchange for the Australian economy. His answers leave room for speculation, but the idea of some competition in this traditionally monopolistic market appears refreshing.

RSDataWeb will make Chi-X trading data available for our clients at the same speed as the stockbrokers flock to the new stock exchange; currently there appear to be 22 stock brokers actively trading on Chi-X Australia.

Enjoy the video!

Recently Om Malik, noted technology writer and entrepreneur, published a remarkble video by Matt Spangler.

Matt, a digital entrepreneur and strategist, had assembled four New York City based web experts to let them talk about what they expect from the web site of the future.

Some of their key points to expect and to work toward are:

  • Ubiquitious casual computing
  • Data integration and data "addiction"
  • More automation
  • Real time information

Apparently in the future it is not so much about how pretty a web site is, but rather when, what and where it delivers. Looks like at RewardSuper we are on track with RSDataWeb. Lots to learn and implement on the way forward to the K.A. realtime application.
